Frequently Asked Questions
How much line does the Yoyito hold?
Line capacity depends on line diameter and how tightly it’s wound. As a general reference, the Yoyito comfortably holds:
- 250 ft of 20 lbs monofilament
- 200 ft of 30 lbs monofilament
Can I use braided line with the Yoyito?
We do not recommend braided line.
Braided line is very thin and abrasive, which can be uncomfortable when handlining and may cut into skin under tension. Monofilament or nylon lines are safer, more forgiving, and better suited to handline fishing.
What type of fishing is the Yoyito best for?
The Yoyito is designed for handline fishing from shore, docks, boats, and kayaks, as well as minimalist or survival-style fishing. It has been used to catch a wide range of fish, from small panfish to larger saltwater species. The limiting factors are line strength, hook selection, and technique—not the reel itself.
What is the Yoyito made of?
The Yoyito is precision-machined from aluminum and finished for durability and corrosion resistance. There are no gears, bearings, or moving parts to fail.
Does the Yoyito require maintenance?
No regular maintenance is required. There are no moving parts. Simply rinse after saltwater use and store dry.
How to properly hold the Yoyito hand reel
Hold the Yoyito by inserting your index, middle, ring and optionally your pinky fingers through the holes in the reel. The back of the reel (the flat side) should rest against the palm of your hand and the front of the reel (the cone) should be pointed towards the opposite hand. The thumb is free to apply pressure to the line -- controlling it and preventing it from unintentionally unspooling.
